A


ACT
Acting in poker is when a player makes decision to bet, raise, fold, call or check. (ACTION)

AGGRESSIVE
Making large frequent bets, raising & re-raising, continually increasing wager and pot.

ALL-IN
To have ALL of your chips in the pot.

AMERICAN AIRLINES
In Hold'em, a pair of Aces in the hole. (POCKET ROCKETS)

ANTE
A small bet all players are required to make before a hand is dealt.


B


BACK RAISE
The action of raising on a raise call. (RE-RAISE)

BAD BEAT
A very good hand that is beat by an even better hand.

BADUGI
A 4-card, 3-draw poker game where the best hand consists of four UNpaired and UNsuited LOW cards. (A,2,3,4 is the best)

BARN
Three of a kind and a pair. (FULL HOUSE)

BELLY BUSTER
An inside straight draw. (GUTSHOT)

BET
To put chips into the pot or make a wager.

BICYCLE
The best possible low hand: A-2-3-4-5. (WHEEL)

BIG BLIND
The largest of two forced bets preflop. Usually 2nd seat left of BUTTON.

BLINDS
A mandatory bet made preflop. Different from "ante" because it is only required of certain players.

BLUFF
To make a bet or raise with a poor hand, in hope that the remaining active player(s) will fold.

BOARD
The exposed or up cards in Hold'em and stud.

BOAT
Three of a kind and a pair. (FULL HOUSE)

BULLETS
Aces.

BUMP
Slang for RAISE.

BUTTON
Since players do not deal the cards, a BUTTON indicates where the "dealer" is.


C


CALL
To match all bets without raising and continuing to be eligible for the pot.

CALLING STATION
Type of player who will call ALOT. They are not aggressive and do not bluff much.

CAP
To cap the betting is to make the last permitted raise in a round.

CHASE
Underdog who continues to call in hopes of catching a much better hand.

CHECK
When you act on your turn by not making an additional wager.

CHECK RAISE
To check initially, then raise a bet made later on in the same betting round.

COLD CALL
Calling both a bet and raise at the same time. 1st player bets, another raises before you can act.

COWBOYS
Kings.

CUTOFF
The last player to act before the BUTTON. 1st seat right of BUTTON.


D


DEAD CARD
A card that is deemed not playable.

DEUCE
A two.

DONKEY
A derogatory term for a bad player. (FISH)

DRAWING DEAD
Drawing to a hand that will lose even if you hit your draw.


E


EARLY POSITION
Players in the first 3 seats to the left of the BUTTON.

EDGE
An advantage over an opponent, either specific or subjective.


F


FACE CARD
A jack, queen or king.

FAMILY POT
A pot where all of the players at the table are participating, even after each has had an opportunity to act.

FISH
A player who loses money. An old saying is "If you can't spot the fish at the table, *you* are the fish."

FIXED LIMIT
A betting structure where the amount of each bet is a specific fixed quantity.

FLOP
In Hold'em, the first three community cards, dealt simultaneously.

FLUSH
A poker hand consisting of five cards all one suit.

FOLD
To decline to call a bet, thus dropping out of a hand.

FORCED BET
Usually the BLINDS. In STUD games it is the weakest hand in the first betting round.

FOUR OF A KIND
A hand containing all four cards of the same rank.

FREE CARD
A card dealt after all players checked in a betting round.

FREEROLL
A poker tournament that does not charge a buy-in fee.

FULL BOAT
See FULL HOUSE.

FULL HOUSE
A hand consisting of 3-of-a-kind and a (different) pair.


G


GUT SHOT
A draw to an inside straight, as in 2-3-4-6.


H


HIGH-LOW SPLIT
Forms of poker in which the pot is split between the best hand and best lowball hand.

HIT
To catch cards that improves one's hand. "I hit a gut-shot draw boat"

HOLE CARDS
In stud and Hold'em, the face-down cards dealt to each player.

I


INSIDE STRAIGHT
Four cards to a straight, where only one in the middle is needed. GUTSHOT

L


LEAK
To show one's hole cards (often unknowingly).

LID
The top card of the deck.

LIMP IN
To only "call" big blind, with a strong hand. Raising last bet round for win.

LOOSE
Playing more hands than the norm.

LOWBALL
Generic term for poker where the lowest hand wins.
